About me

  • Hi, I’m Clara Ibel Chamorro—a scientist, mentor, collaborator, researcher, grant writer, project manager, and lab manager, with an enduring enthusiasm for translational science, cell biology, and regenerative medicine.

At my core, I’m a biologist passionate about understanding how cells communicate, and how this knowledge can be harnessed to develop new therapeutic strategies.

I earned my PhD in Medical Science from the Department of Medicine at ̽»¨¾«Ñ¡ in 2010. My research focused on the antimicrobial peptide LL-37 and its role in epithelial biology—from promoting wound healing to modulating immune responses. This work sparked my deep appreciation for cellular signaling and tissue homeostasis, and showed me how molecular mediators can orchestrate complex healing processes.

Currently, I’m a Senior Researcher in the Tissue Engineering Group at the Department of Women’s and Children’s Health at ̽»¨¾«Ñ¡. My work centers on the development of advanced 3D tissue models to study wound healing in genitourinary organs. I contribute actively to shaping the researh direction of our group, perticularly in understanding the role of microRNAs in genitourinary tissue repair.

Research

  • I am into translational research-The idea of bridging the gap between bench research and real-world appications, where science have the potential to make a clinical impact. Building on that, I am interesed in understanding how tissue healing occur across different tissues. I am particurlarly focussed  on developing methodologies and in vitro 3d strategies to study cellular behaviour, drug responses and regenerative medicine approaches without relying on animal models.

Teaching

  • Mentorship is one of the most rewarding aspects of my career in research. Over the years, I have had the privilege of supervising students at various academic levels—from undergraduate to master’s and PhD candidates.

I take a hands-on yet supportive approach, guiding students through experimental design while encouraging them to contribute their own ideas. My goal is to encorage critical thinking, scientific independence, and confidence.

I particularly enjoy helping students develop and refine their experimental strategies, troubleshoot technical issues, and navigate the daily challenges of laboratory research. I also emphasize the importance of scientific communication, data analysis, and engaging in meaningful academic discussion.
