PURPOSE & DEFINITIONS 1.1 The purpose of this agreement is to define expectations, responsibilities and rights for students, supervisors and the host department, in order to facilitate cooperation and collaboration throughout the term of the students research education. The agreement should be reviewed at the time of acceptance of the student to the department. 1.2 The Department will refer to the Director of Research Education and the Research Education Administrator. 1.3 The Student will refer to the person initiating their research education. 1.4 The Main Supervisor will refer to the Department-approved researcher who will have overall responsibility for the Student. 1.5 The Co-supervisor will refer to any researcher who will have a supportive role in the Students research education. 2. DEPARTMENT 2.1 The Department, represented by the Director of Research Education and the Research Education Administrator, agree to provide the Supervisors and Student with updated information regarding research education within ̽ѡ and specifically within the Department of Clinical Neurosciences, including regular updating of information posted on the Departments homepage as well as via regular email communication. 2.2 The Research Education Administrator agrees to distribute relevant report forms to both Student and Supervisor in good time and to process all returned forms as well as submission of applications for research education point registration in LADOK. 2.3 The Director of Research Education agrees to be available for discussion of any matter arising from the research education of the Student brought to their attention by either Student or Supervisor. 2.4 The Department expects the Student to actively pursue their research project. Should the Student fail to follow their research plan the Department and Supervisor can apply to the ̽ѡ Board of Research Education for withdrawal of all support and resources required for research education. Such a decision must be motivated and documented. 2.5 The Department expects the Supervisor to be actively engaged in their role as supervisor. Should the Supervisor fail to execute their duty the Department can apply to the ̽ѡ Board of Research Education for withdrawal of the right to supervise, thereby preventing the Supervisor from enrolling further students. 3. SUPERVISORS 3.1 The Supervisors agree to maintain a professional relationship with the Student and to strive to be a good professional role model at all times. 3.2 The Supervisors shall show respect for their role as supervisor, and to be actively engaged in developing their competence in this role. 3.3 The Supervisor should always treat the Student with respect, and any behavior that the Student could consider inappropriate or psychologically demeaning is forbidden. The Supervisor should respect the Students personal integrity and not prejudice the Student regarding gender, ethnic affiliation, religion or other beliefs, sexual orientation or disability. 3.4 The Supervisors agree not to initiate collaborative research projects involving the Student not outlined within the Students Individual Study Plan without prior agreement by the Student. 3.5 The Main Supervisor agrees to take responsibility that the Student (i) completes a Personal Evaluation at least once a year, (ii) completes and submits an Activity Report to the Research Education Administrator once per term, (iii) completes and submits an Annual Report to the Research Education Administrator once per year. 3.6 The Supervisors agree to takes responsibility for their continued interaction with the Student, ensuring open communication throughout the period of research education. 3.7 Should it be required that the Supervisor present scientific data generated by the Student, this should be discussed and agreed in advance by the Student, the Students input should be explicit and the ability of the Student to publish their data at a later date should not be compromised. 3.8 The Supervisor is expected to take responsibility for the practical arrangements leading to the Students final thesis defence. 4. STUDENT 4.1 The Student agrees to take responsibility for conduct of their research education programme outlined in the Students Individual Study Plan, including updates outlined in the Annual Report. 4.2 The Student agrees not to undertake collaborative research projects not outlined within the Students Individual Study Plan without prior agreement by the Main Supervisor. 4.3 The Student agrees to take responsibility that they (i) complete a Personal Evaluation at least once a year, (ii) complete and submit an Activity Report to the Research Education Administrator once per term, (iii) complete and submit an Annual Report to the Research Education Administrator once per year. 4.4 The Student agrees to takes responsibility of their continued interaction with the Supervisors, ensuring open communication throughout the period of research education. 4.5 The Student is expected to follow current praxis regarding scientific collaboration and publication of research data (Vancouver convention), whereby every persons input is represented and can be specified if required. 4.6 The Student should respect the Supervisors personal integrity and not prejudice the Supervisor regarding gender, ethnic affiliation, religion or other beliefs, sexual orientation or disability. Inappropriate or psychologically demeaning behavior directed at the supervisor (or any co-worker) is forbidden. 5. GENERAL 5.1 As the budgets of different research groups differ widely, financing of the proposed research education should be discussed between the Student and the Supervisors so that a budget for the entire period is overviewed; that it is clear which supervisor is primarily responsible for salary/running costs for the project; that potential additional payments for planned activities outside the scope of the project are discussed; that responsibility for applications and reports in conjunction with participation in conferences, courses and other travel is defined. 5.2 The Supervisor should within an acceptable time frame read through texts generated by the Student. With respect to the timeframe the Student should show respect and understanding for the Supervisors other responsbilities/tasks. 5.3 It is expected that both Student and Supervisor should inform each-other of any research-related or personal matter of relevance of significance for conduct of the research project. 5.4 If either the Student or Supervisor consider the Student-Supervisor interaction so problematic that continued collaboration is significantly compromised or impossible, either Student or Supervisor should approach a third party for help in resolving the issue, in which all parties should be actively involved. It is recommended that the Director of Research Education be informed in these cases.
