Ethics review in Sweden is a topic of debate and has recently been the subject of an investigation. It has been argued in the debate that ethics reviews of research involving humans and animals are disproportionately time-consuming, costly, and overly unpredictable. This project will study the processes of ethics review by requesting data from the Swedish Ethical Review Authority and the regional animal ethics committees.

The project will result in an open database of approved projects, as well as statistics on applications, lead times, and outcomes. The project will also estimate the costs of the review system in terms of time and money and propose improvements.

鈥淲e want to contribute facts and information to a debate where many people have opinions,鈥 says Gustav Nilsonne. 鈥淏y producing statistics, we can help researchers and companies who are planning ethics reviews. We will also make proposals on how the review process can become more effective, making it easier to conduct research and initiate new studies in Sweden,鈥 Gustav Nilsonne continues.
