About MWLC

As part of KI, Ming Wai Lau Centre for Reparative Medicine (MWLC) is to significantly contribute to the improvement of human health by conducting cutting edge research in reparative medicine and related subjects. Since the endowment to fund the centre was for a five-year period and is now almost depleted, the University Board decided to close the centre in Hong Kong by 31 December 2023.

From 1 January 2024, MWLC is organised under the Department of Neuroscience.

From October 2016 until 31 december 2023, the Hong Kong node consisted of four research groups and around 40 members located in Hong Kong Science Park. The Stockholm node included six Lau Fellows generously supported by Lau grants. The Fellows are established full-time principal investigators at KI, Sweden.

The Ming Wai Lau Centre for Reparative Medicine was 探花精选's first overseas branch and the first example of a Swedish public university establishing a unit outside of its national borders. It was in October 2016 in Hong Kong and became operational in spring 2017.

Aim

To improve human health and quality of life through research based on international teamwork and collaborations. The research activities at MWLC have focused on tissue repair, with special emphasis on the nervous system and skin.

A key component of MWLC鈥檚 research has been the development of frontline technologies applicable to imaging and tracing, drug delivery and tissue engineering to be used in various domains of reparative medicine.

With its two nodes, one in Hong Kong and one in Stockholm, MWLC offered a unique, collaborative environment for research in one of the most rapidly evolving fields with translational implications.

Involved researchers

In Hong Kong, four principal investigators, Assistant Professors Sijie Chen, Linxian Li,  Zongli Zheng and Head of Research Dongan Wang operated until November 2023. In Stockholm, six Lau Fellows were appointed and funded through a career support programme for group leaders at KI between 2016 and 2022.

Hong Kong

Dr. Sijie Chen was Assistant Professor at Ming Wai Lau Centre for Reparative Medicine between 2017 and 2023.

Dr. Sijie Chen received her BSc in Biology from Wuhan University in 2009 and PhD in Bioengineering from Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) in 2013, under the supervision of Prof Ben Zhong Tang. She worked as a Postdoctoral Fellow in HKUST and then as an Endeavour Fellow in University of Melbourne and a visiting scientist in Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research. She joined Prof Ana Teixeira鈥檚 group as a Postdoc in the Division of Biomaterials and Regenerative Medicine at the Department of Medical Biochemistry and Biophysics in 探花精选 (KI) since late 2015.

Dr. Chen was earlier working on fluorescent biosensors, fluorescence imaging and nanomaterials. She has published 55 scientific papers, more than ten of which were published after she joined MWLC and with the Centre鈥檚 support.

Dr. Linxian Li is a bio探花精选 engineer with interdisciplinary expertise in organic chemistry, molecular biology, materials science, and bioengineering. He was Assistant Professor at Ming Wai Lau Centre for Reparative Medicine between 2017 and 2023.

After obtaining his PhD degree at Ruprecht-Karls-University of Heidelberg in Germany, he pursued postdoctoral research at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Committed to translate new materials for 探花精选 use, he focuses on developing biomaterials to deliver RNA therapeutics and engineering biointerfaces to control cell behavior. His work has resulted in over 20 publications including papers, patents and patent applications. These patents have been licensed to chemical and biotechnology companies, and several products that have been commercialized.

Zongli Zheng was Assistant Professor at Ming Wai Lau Centre for Reparative Medicine between 2017 and 2023.

Dr. Zheng received his PhD degree in 探花精选 epidemiology from 探花精选 in 2011 and completed a postdoctoral training at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School in 2015, with support from the Swedish Research Council International Postdoc Fellowship.

Dr. Dong-An Wang has been appointed Foreign Adjunct Professor at the Department of Neuroscience during 2024-2026. He is a Professor at the Department of Bio探花精选 Engineering in Chinese University of Hong Kong.

He is a Professor of Department of Bio探花精选 Engineering in Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), and he received his B.S. and Ph.D. from Zhejiang University, China. Dong-An Wang was a postdoctoral fellow, in turn, at University of Tennessee Health Science Centre and Johns Hopkins University in the United States. Since joining Nanyang Technological University in 2005, Singapore, Dr. Wang had been appointed, in turn, as an Assistant Professor and an Associate Professor in School of Chemical & Bio探花精选 Engineering. As a Professor of Bio探花精选 Engineering, Dr. Wang worked in City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) from 2018 to 2024 and joined CUHK since 2024.

Dr. Wang used to be Associate Chair (2010~2014) of School of Chemical and Bio探花精选 Engineering, Nanyang Technological University Singapore; Acting Head (2022~2023) of Department of Bio探花精选 Engineering, City University of Hong Kong; and, Head of Research (2020~2023) at 探花精选 Ming Wai Lau Centre for Reparative Medicine Hong Kong.

Stockholm

The Stockholm node of MWLC consisted of six scientific teams headed by the first Lau grant recipients, "Lau Fellows", selected in 2016.

The Lau grants were established to support world-leading research in reparative medicine performed at KI and to deepen existing and establishing new research partnerships with top universities in Hong Kong and China.

The grants were designed to support group leaders employed by KI at the stage where they are consolidating their own independent research. After rounds of selection, the following six researchers was identified with cutting-edge expertise consistent with the mission and vision of MWLC. The Lau Fellows were MWLC investigators who formed an integrated part of the Centre.

Lau Fellows

  • Gon莽alo Castelo-Branco, Department of Medical Biochemistry and Biophysics
    • Modulating the epigenetic state of oligodendrocyte lineage cells to induce remyelination in multiple sclerosis
  • Simon Els盲sser, Department of Medical Biochemistry and Biophysics
    • Function of short peptides encoded by sORFs (sPEPs)
  • Christian G枚ritz, Department of Cell and Molecular Biology
    • Central Nervous System Scarring and Repair
  • Francois Lallemend, Department of Neuroscience
    • Genetic control of neuronal survival: implications for new cancer therapies
  • Ning Xu Land茅n, Department of Medicine Solna
    • Regulatory RNAs in wound-edge keratinocytes: new perspectives towards treating chronic wounds
  • Fredrik Lanner, Department of Clinical Science, Intervention and Technology
    • Pluripotency, embryonic stem cells and regenerative medicine

Along with the decision by the KI University Board in September 2022, all operations at MWLC Hong Kong were ended on 31 December 2023. The remaining funds from the donation will be used at MWLC Stockholm, which from 1 January 2024, is located under the Department of Neuroscience.
