Division of Parasitology

The Division of Parasitology is comprised of research led by:

  • Susanne Nylén â€“ Her group investigates how host-parasite interactions shape immune responses over time, with a focus on how parasitic infections influence immunity to co-infections and vaccines. They also explore drug resistance in parasitic nematodes.
  • Akira Kaneko â€“ Working closely with endemic communities in Vanuatu and Kenya, his research focuses on the feasibility and sustainability of malaria elimination, aiming to develop community-directed strategies for long-term malaria control and eradication.
  • Noushin Emami â€“ Her research centers on vector biology and the interactions between parasites and their insect vectors, with the goal of understanding transmission dynamics and developing novel vector control strategies.

Phage Modulation

  • Andrea Fossati Team- The lab’s main goal is to discover these bacterial defense systems, understand their composition and viral triggers as well as identifying phage mechanisms to evade them. Driving this goal is the desire to combat phage resistance mechanisms to make bacteria more susceptible to phage predation. In other words, we want to tilt the scale of the phage-bacterial warfare towards the phage by disabling the bacterial immunity.

Tuberculosis Aerobiology

  • Antonio Rothfuchs Group- Use air sampling to study the survival and infectiousness of M. tuberculosis in aerosols, and to detect M. tuberculosis in cough and indoor air.
