MELIORA

MELIORA (Multimodal Engagement and sustainable Lifestyle Interventions Optimizing breast cancer Risk reduction supported by Artificial Intelligence) is a collaborative EU-funded initiative that leverages AI and digital tools to empower women at risk of breast cancer, as well as patients and survivors, fostering sustainable behavioural changes through personalized lifestyle interventions.

Female breast cancer accounts for 12% of all cancer cases worldwide, with approximately 2.3 million new cases annually. But the burden goes far beyond health—breast cancer affects families, communities, and economies. Many of these cases are preventable. Yet, key challenges remain: lack of awareness, limited health literacy, and socio-demographic inequalities, that are especially pronounced in rural areas and among individuals with lower levels of education.

MELIORA addresses these challenges by delivering cost-efficient, sustainable prevention programs through digital health innovations. The intervention combines personalized lifestyle guidance, behavioural feedback, and educational content, delivered via healthcare professionals and a digital platform— the MELIORA intelligent Virtual Coach.

The MELIORA Virtual Coach is an AI-driven, context-sensitive platform that offers personalized health recommendations, motivational messages, and timely feedback to help participants make small, lasting changes that can reduce breast cancer risk.

How does it work ?

  1. Educational Material Library: A pool of mini-courses, articles, videos, guides, and feedback messages designed to engage diverse audiences, including those typically harder to reach.
  2. Content Adaptation Engine: A causal recommendation engine that will tailor content to each individual:
    • Capabilities: Builds awareness and provides practical tips for healthier choices—like walking instead of driving or choosing more fruits when grocery shopping.
    • Opportunities: Highlights real-life possibilities for improved diet and activity, personalized to factors like location, family status, work routine, and social environment.
    • Motivation: Identifies what inspires each participant and delivers motivating, culturally relevant messages in the participant’s native language, conveyed in an easily digestible format.

The MELIORA interventions will be implemented in real-world settings and will involve more than 2000 women from various socio-economic backgrounds in both urban and rural areas across four European countries (Greece, Sweden, Spain, Lithuania). The project brings together  including ̽»¨¾«Ñ¡ (KI), from seven European countries.
