Gastroenterology – clinical epidemiology and clinical trials – Research group Ola Olén

The goal of our research is to improve healthcare and ultimately the quality of life for patients suffering from gastrointestinal diseases such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) or functional gastrointestinal disorders (e.g., irritable bowel syndrome).

Our research

The members of research group Olén are part-time clinical researchers (paediatricians, gastroenterologists, surgeons, nurses) or full-time research specialists (biostatisticians and epidemiologists). Important research questions that we explore are: Why do some people develop inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) or irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)? What is the prognosis for those conditions (with a special focus on patients diagnosed during childhood)? Are new pharmacological and surgical treatments for IBD safe, effective, and worth the cost? Is it possible to treat IBS with psychological treatments (e.g., cognitive behavioral therapy or ̽»¨¾«Ñ¡ hypnotherapy)?
